$160 Million Grayling Amusement Park Plans Announced A proposed theme park that developers say could bring thousand of jobs to northern Michigan is one step closer to reality. The land that the developer is eyeing is just south of Grayling on I-75 and 4 Mile Road in Crawford County. Tuesday night for the first time residents in Grayling got a peak at the conceptual plans of the proposed theme park. The Grayling Township Planning Commission voted unanimously to approve the conceptual plan and send that approval to the Department of Natural Resources. The state owns the land and the entertainment company is hoping to get the seal of approval from those who could become their new neighbors. The land currently sits empty, but if an entertainment company can purchase the two thousand acres from the state it would eventually look like other theme parks across the country. The designer is the same group that built Six Flags and Universal Theme Parks. This park would be open year round and would feature roller coasters, water parks for all ages, and even in the winter months snow sports. The company Axion Entertainment would even like to build a train in the likeness of the polar express. The park would cost one hundred and 61 million dollars to build. The project manager says there would be major benefits for the surrounding community. Patrick Crosson Axiom Entertainment told 7&4 News reporter Lisa Chavarria " this will create 2,000 jobs, 700 of those are permanent year round jobs, the annual payroll projections is 25 million dollars of the real estate taxes". Some downtown business owners and residents feel a park of this magnitude could give Grayling and northern Michigan the economic boost it needs. Those who work near the proposed site may experience severe traffic problems near their jobs. One resident said at the meeting "what do you plan on doing with 4 Mile Road, I know that the trucks barrel down 4 mile and I know that we would have groups of cars and young people excited to go to a theme park, what are you going to do with the truck traffic?". The project manager says they have plans on widening the road to accomodate more truck and car traffic. When asked what if the theme park turns out to be a flop the project manager says they're not looking that far ahead and say they wouldn't waste investing 60 million dollars on their own for the project to fail. If all goes through, the company hopes to open the park by 2010. The proposed project still needs to go through the Department of Environmental Quality, and Crawford County as the plans would eventually be brought to public hearings before the anything could move forward. alaska arizona arkansas california colorado connecticut delaware district of columbia florida georgia hawaii idaho illinois indiana iowa kansas kentucky louisiana maine maryland massachusetts michigan minnesota mississippi missouri montana nebraska nevada new hampshire new jersey new mexico new york north carolina north dakota ohio oklahoma oregon pennsylvania puerto rico rhode island south carolina south dakota tennessee texas utah vermont virginia washington west virginia wisconsin wyoming |
